Learn how to use play to improve emotional well-being in child and adolescent mental health.
☆Who is this for?
• All healthcare professionals working with children and adolescents in a mental health setting.
• Previous training and experience in typical child development and child and adolescent mental health is preferable.
• Including professions such as medical practitioners, psychologists, occupational therapists, social workers, mental health nurses and other therapists.
☆This training aims to empower participants:
• To understand the therapeutic power and value of play
• To be aware of how typical play may vary according to age, gender, culture, etc.
• To consider typical childhood development when assessing and treating a child in a mental health setting
• To understand how a child and adolescent client differ from one another and from adult clients
• To consider a child’s unique temperament during assessment and treatment.
☆This training aims to teach participants:
• The history of play therapy and the different approaches within play therapy
• The theory behind child-centred play therapy and how to apply it in practice
• The theory behind gestalt-play therapy and how to apply it in practice
• Why, when and how to set boundaries within the practice
• The therapeutic use of self as an essential technique in the play practice
• How to set up a playroom and select toys
• How to conduct sessions/consultations/
• How to apply different techniques and methods when assessing and treating a child/adolescent.
• How to plan and execute therapy sessions for clients.
• About a variety of modalities/types of play and how and when to use them in practice.
☆Participants will receive exposure to the following play modalities:
• Relaxing Play (board games, puzzles)
• Sand Play (miniatures, symbolic play)
• Metaphors and Fantasies (Rosebush, Monster, Safe Space)
• Creative Play (drawing, painting, clay)
• Biblio-Play (stories, cartoons, books)
• Projective techniques (drawing, painting, sculpting)
• Dramatized Play (puppets, dolls, masks, dress-up)
